  Warum sich in Punkto Waffengesetzgebung nur schwer etwas erreichen lässt, zeigt die WP in einer Grafik: Das Thema kocht nach jedem Massaker kurz hoch, doch dann wendet man sich schnell wieder anderen Dingen zu.

  Was ich noch nicht wusste: Bis vor kurzem galt das individuelle Recht auf Waffenbesitz keinesfalls als durch die amerikanische Verfassung garantiertes Recht.

  For decades, federal courts overwhelmingly rejected the conclusion that the Second Amendment protects an individual right. It wasn’t until the 21st century that lower federal courts, filled with appointees of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, started to adopt the individual-rights position. And, of course, the Supreme Court itself adopted that view in 2008, by a 5-to-4 vote.

  Damit sind wohl alle Trümpfe bei Obama. Kommt es (was wahrscheinlich ist) zu einem Fiscal Cliff, so sind in der öffentlichen Meinung klar die zerstrittenen und kompromisslosen Republikaner Schuld. Auch daran, dass es nun für alle Steuererhöhungen gibt und der Militärhaushalt gesenkt wird, da schneiden sie sich ins eigene Fleisch. Obama musste sich noch nicht einmal sonderlich anstrengen, um die GOP als vollkommene Deppen da stehen zu lassen, er hat nicht mal hart verhandelt, schnell Kompromisse akzeptiert. Nur eine völlig führungslose Partei lässt zu, dass die klar erkennbare Strategie des Verhandlungsführers (eigener Vorschlag des Kongresses, um Obama unter Druck zu setzen) so torpediert wird. Und danach gehen sie in die Weihnachtsfereien, während das Land vor dem finanziellen Abgrund steht. Obama kann den Fiscal Cliff nun herauszögern und weiter verhandeln. Er kann ihn auch erst mal zulassen und schnell ein Gesetz zur "Steuersenkung" für 97% der Bevölkerung vorlegen, dass die Republikaner dann mit Schmerzen ablehnen könnten, weil "ihre" 3% fehlen. Vermutlich wird es erst dann zu Eingungen kommen, wenn die Republikaner richtig in der Scheiße sitzen oder sich gespalten hat.

  Richtig lächerlich wird es erst, wenn man sich Boehners Vorschlag mal genau anschaut: Steuererhöhungen nur für Jahreseinkommen über einer Million, dafür anderswo Steuererleichterungen für die betroffenen Superreichen, dafür ein Wegfall von Steuererleichterungen für Mittel- und Unterschicht in Höhe von 25 Milliarden jährlich. Diesen Vorschlag hat seine Fraktion abgelehnt, weil er ihr zu links / sozialistisch / whatever war. Die GOP-Abgeordneten haben das deutliche Signal, das von den letzten Wahlen ausging - die Steuerfrage wurde nun wirklich ständig thematisiert - immer noch nicht verstanden. Oder man möchte halt nicht der Erste sein, der in den Augen der eigenen Basis zum Verräter an hehren Prinzipien wird.

  Naturally, public anger at the Republicans is growing. But how furious would people feel if they fully understood this latest absurd episode on Capitol Hill?  Boehner’s proposal  was exceptionally generous to the wealthiest taxpayers – and mean to the poor and working families.

  His Plan B would have extended the Bush tax cuts for their first million dollars of income; repealed a limit on tax deductions by the highest-income households; established a dividend tax rate of only 20 percent; and maintained an estate tax break for those same highest-income families worth an average $1.1 million. At the same time, according to the authoritative Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Boehner’s bill would have ended various tax credits for low-income and middle-income families, costing them roughly $25 billion a year and driving millions of American children into poverty.

  But awful as that proposal was, it was deemed too liberal by the dominant faction in the Republican caucus. They found it so offensively decent, so treasonously moderate, that they made fools of their own leaders and themselves rather than let negotiations continue. (Their spending bill was even worse.)

  Das Ganze deutet ja darauf hin, dass Boehner entweder glaubt bzw. glaubte, dass noch wahnsinnig viel Zeit für strategische Spielchen besteht, oder er bewusst gar keine Eingung will, sondern nur den Demokraten die Schuld für ein Scheitern zuschieben. Ich könnte mir auch vorstellen, dass es in den wirren Köpfen der Republikaner besser wäre, zunächst mal die automatischen Steuererhöhungen in Kraft treten zu lassen, um sich dann wieder als Steuersenkungspartei zu betätigen und dabei höhere Steuersätze akzeptieren, als sie es bei einer Einigung vor dem Fiscal Cliff akzeptiert hätten. Aber dann kämpfen sie nur noch für die Superreichen.

  As the Democrats make a case for tax relief for the middle class, the GOP will be left making a case for giving a break to the rich. That puts the president's party in a good position to retake the House in 2014.

  Naja, die Idee, daß Boehner nur die verschiedenen Truppen zählen will, um den Punkt zu finden an dem er mit den geringsten Kollateralschäden einen Kompromiss machen kann, ist für jemanden der an deutsche Politik gewohnt ist, schon bestechend.

  Aber ich glaube im Gegensatz zum zitierten Blogger nicht mehr an Rationalität oder gar Vernunft in der Gesellschafts- und Fiskalpolitik der Republikaner (auch nicht bei ihrer Führung).

  Irgendwie ist Boehmer aber auch die ärmste Sau. Stellt Euch vor, Ihr wärt Fraktionsvorsitzender dieses irren Haufens - da kann man einfach nicht gut aussehen. Der Mann hat ja mit Obama verhandelt und dieser ist ihm sehr weit entgegengekommen - mit ner halbwegs vernünftigen Fraktion im Rücken hätte Boehner das als riesigen Erfolg verbuchen können, aber seine Leute hätten noch nicht einmal diese goldene Brücke überquert, die ihnen der Präsident da gebaut hat, weil das halt doch einige Zugeständnisse erfordert hätte - wie halt üblich im Politikbetrieb.

  Große Teile der Fraktion wollen den Mann ja angeblich absägen, weil er ihnen zu soft ist. Sollen sie das mal machen, noch stärker auf Obstruktion setzen (natürlich, ohne eigene finanzierbare Gegenvorschläge zu präsentieren), dann sind die nächsten Midterms ein Blutbad für die GOP, die Umfragen sind ja sehr eindeutig und sehen die Schuld am gegenwärtigen Gewürge mit deutlicher Mehrheit bei der GOP. Zu Boehners jetzt gescheitertem Plan B:

  Plan B was a conservative plan with one little tiny dash of compromise, one small and mostly symbolic feather step outside the safe zone of hard-right ideology and toward...not even the center, but the far-right fringe of the center. And the Republicans could not vote even for that.

All they want to do is destroy--the federal government; Barack Obama; the national economy as long as Obama is president might gain from good economic news.   Nicht mal die Superreichen können ja glücklich sein mit dem Zirkus, den die Partei gerade veranstaltet - wenn sich beide Seiten jetzt auf einen Kompromiss einigen würden, sähe der reichenfreundlicher aus als eine Einigung im Januar (in beiden Fällen werden die Reichen zur Kasse gebeten werden). Um auf dem Papier nicht für Steuererhöhungen zu stimmen, akzeptiert die Fraktion, dass Reiche in Zukunft höhere Steuern zahlen müssen als bei einer konzilianteren Haltung der Partei. Man muss schon ein beinharter Ideologe sein oder massiv Angst vor einer irrationalen und bis zur Halskrause verärgerten und verstockten Basis haben, um diesen Weg zu gehen, der praktisch jeden Bürger (auch die Reichen) außerhalb dieser Basis vor den Kopf stößt.

  Vielleicht sind es ja gerade die Reichen, die die GOP aufhalten werden:

This time the enemy is the Bolsheviks of the right, our current GOP. They’re taking us over the fiscal cliff, and they’ll do far worse without an intervention.
